FACING THE FACTS

With over 43 million adults suffering from mental illness, research should be at the forefront, yet mental healthcare is behind all other areas of medicine.

Here are some statistics representing our world today:

  • 1.3 million attempted suicide in 2017

  • 2.4 million American adults live with schizophrenia

  • 6.1 million American adults live with bi-polar disorder

  • 16 million American adults live with major depression

  • 42 million American adults live with anxiety disorders

The troubling aspect of these numbers is the possibility of inaccuracy. While they have been documented correctly, they represent diagnoses without any objective testing. The actual numbers are probably much higher due to many individuals not seeking help from a system they know to be failing.
